TOPIC: Advice on how to take off a fiberglass bottom

Advice on how to take off a fiberglass bottom 12 years 4 days ago #59296

Hello all: I have never posted on this forum. I have never seen a boat I did not love. wood, Glass alum, inboard, out board, sail, dingy, canoe. love em all.

Any way,I picked up a 16 ft Thompson sea coaster a couple of years ago, with the intention to refinish top sides and put a motor on it and sell it. I new it had a glass bottom and thought that was good. Have since found out, the glass bottom is a problem and should come off. Question, how do you take off the fiberglass? is the only way to do it is sanding? Any chemicals out there that would soften it up so I could scrap it off?

I am looking for advise, any would be appreciated,

thanks,

Craig

Was it glassed over bottom paint ? Or was it stripped to bare wood then glassed ?
I have a Shepherd outboard where the PO glassed all the bottom seams
over the bottom paint. I put some paint stripper on the paint. After a while I was able to catch a fiberglass edge, and I was able to peel glass off in chunks, because it took the paint with it.
