I picked this 140 merc up today , has brand new wire harness new starter and hoping a good switch box. Attached pictures of serial number and engine cover . Seems to have special engine cover with the louvers , does any one know where I can search more info on this engine not sure if stickers on cover are right . Thanks for any info .

Serial numbers 4865678 through 5189787 are 1978 models.

Its a 1978 1400. Basically a 1500 that was rebadged to 1400 when the V6 motors were coming out. Few minor changes.

The cover is homemade. It looks like a good job. But the original XS vented cowling had larger louvers set at an angle. Google 1500 XS Mercury and you will see what the originals looked like.

Stickers are homemade as well. NYMARINE.CA has stickers by year.

Agree with Conrad on that! I never seen a Merc wrap with straight louvers! And yep, they are well done!

thanks for the info guys , will just order a blue stripe 150hp decal to put on it , I think it looks cooler than the regular cowl. Put the new wire harness and switch box on my motor turn the key and it fired right up , best $200.00 I spent so far, now just need to find one with a good tilt and trim unit.
