TOPIC: 1350 Hot Rod Project

1350 Hot Rod Project 8 years 4 months ago #118847

I'm not finished with it yet, but the powerhead is all re-machined inside and rebuilt.
The DSH is a Bonneville.
and the lower unit is a Mercury SSM.
I'm not sure if I'll use the louvered 1500xs wrap on this build or not. I'm thinking of using a set of red stripe Twister decals.
I probably won't finish the beast right away due to a lack of 'Play Money', but I'll post pixs when I 'git-r-dun'.

Go with Twister decals as louvered are "keepers"!

Badger Bob asked, "now that year it the ford T in the back ground?"
and
g3jim asked, "Whats that little buggy behind the Merc Monster Doc?"

So I'll 'drift' off topic for a second :)

It is a 1926 Model T, 4 door touring model.
It was left out in the weather here in the Great Pacific North West on the southern edge of the Olympic Rain Forest, slowly rotting into the ground.
I had a pal lift it onto a trailer with a mini excavator to bring it home.
The transmission, engine, and brakes were rusted solid. The tires had rotted away at the contact with the ground. The steel wheel rims were also rusted severely at the ground, and the tires were flat and rotten.
The radiator was full of a rust colored thick milk shake consistency liquid. I couldn't believe that the radiator and block had not cracked open during the freezing winters.
I spend a couple years tinkering with it between Mercury Magic projects, and eventually got it running.
Original radiator, motor, transmission & rear end were used.
It had an original electric starter, which I went through.
I added a tractor distributor I snagged off of ebay, and the coil and spark plug wires are OEM Kiekhaefer Mercury Outboard parts.
I also added a 6 volt alternator to replace the very dead 6 volt generator.
I also added an 'oo-gah' horn.
Replacement wooden spoke wheels, tires and rims were way too expensive for my pocket book, so I converted the original Model T hubs to use 4 lug Ford Escort - Mustang wheels and tires.
I found the rustiest old Ford rims I could find, so they would 'match' the 'surface rust' character of the ole survivor.
We drive it to town to car shows and for lunch during the summer months.
See how much of the starboard side metal under the doors has fallen off since it arrived. (compare pictures 2 & 3)
I try to make room for it inside during the foul winter months, and start her up every month or so. I run 91 non-Ethanol gas.
We call it "Patina Royale".

ps: note the mention of Mercury O/B parts to keep this post on topic.

Re:1350 Hot Rod Project 8 years 4 months ago #118925

THANKS everybody!
We get a lot of 'thumbs up' and big ole smiles when we're "touring in the T"
Just when everything is in a rush,...Hurry here,...Hurry there,...I like to take a step back and cruise the T.
The fastest I've ever gone (and only for about 100 yards) was 22 MPH.
(some of my old cop pals have radar guns - lidar these days)
15 MPH is purrrrr-fect!

How good is that!
You are a bunch of surprises Doc.
It makes me smile when I think of the man who makes go-fast motors and finely engineered machines that look like new, who loves the thrill of speed on the water, wind blowing in his face, and yet sometimes is found to be sitting in his rusty old Ford cruising down the road at 15mph … and loving it!
Great stuff!

Looks nice.. I like those mids better than the Parker. The parker looked cool, but you had to cut the back off your lower unit to have it line up.

"Milkdud" wrote,

BUT,...If you just happen to have a SSM that has already been hacked by a previous owner,...
AND,...You just happen to have a rather odd-ball unique little DSH,...
Modifying things to look good together isn't all that big of a deal.
The little DSH will actually fit under the bigger inline-6s, including the 1000, 1250, & 1350 with use of an EEP (exhaust extension plate), and an 8 spline SSM. BUT,...I don't want to cut off any of my 8 spline SSMs.

Very nice mods. The look of the shorty lower is just so cool.
If ya don't mind (don't want to hi- jack the thread)
On my 115 Tower is there any do it yourself mods that can be done to improve performance? Easy/cheap? I am hoping there might be a exhaust mod to open it up a bit, I love the sound of them twisted up a bit, nothing sounds like it. Is there a way to do it?
