TOPIC: 1958 Totem Craft hull engine info???

1958 Totem Craft hull engine info??? 13 years 7 months ago #15898

I am new to the classic boat thing and just got a 1958 Totem Craft It mesures about 14' from bow to stern and was originaly equiped with a Mercury engine. It has a Cat type front hull going to a flat bottom in the stern. The transon is about 14" tall. I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge about these hulls and what would be a good 1958 to 1963 era engine to run on it? Bigger the better ;) I am wondering if a mark 55 would be too small and if a mark 75 or 78 or even a mercury 1000 would be better and still somewhat safe? ;)
thank you for any info you may have on this hull and or opinions.

Yes, these were made in Seattle. They made sea sled style hulls with the sponsoned hull forward leading back to a single flat planing surface at transom chine. There was a 19'er over on Bainbridge a few years back, blue. I might have a brochure on these, can't recall now. I know I have some old mags with Totem Craft ads in them. There is a guy familiar with these in the Puget Sounders chapter of AOMCI.
Send me a pm and I'll see over the next weekend.
A Merc 500 would provide about 32mph on that hull is my guess, I had a Skagit 14 a couple years back that did 32.8 with two people on gps, cruised comfortably in mid twenties too and not bad on fuel (I'm used to 115 propshaft hp so it seemed frugal, ha!).
I have a short shaft Merc 800 inline six that would fit, it's on my Powercat 14T right now. Are you in WA?
