Thought I was gonna need a lift kit for my cherry picker installing the Merc 1K. When you stand next to one of these it's clear how they got tagged "Tower Of Power"

Most important number one thing with any engine...the motor must be taller than the top of the windshield.

I'd need a straight 18 cylinder to be taller than the flybridge on the Fabuglas... (anyone got (2) extra Merc 1400's and a good aluminum welder? )

Paint and vinyl decals for almost every 50's - mid 70's OMC's and Mercs can be found at www.nymarine.ca Peter's products are exact matches for the original and well worth the investment to get it right.

Matt, I found the motor by posted a wanted add in the glassifieds. It was painted with Emron, not show quality but very nice. The link Al posted does have nice decals, I have not tried their paints. Touched up a Merc once with Krylon...faded out in just a couple months.

69 Fabuglas, Adapter plates and timing, "TV" Tommy Ivo inspired Merc Max 18 cyl. for ya ;)

Be careful when trimming that "Tommy Ivo" (I do remember him and his crazy creations!) Merc, the upper cowl could hit you in the back of the head! LOL Seriously CF, the Merc looks perfect on the 'Ray IMO.

 ... love the 18 cylinder...

But I don't think I'm going to be using the pull-start anytime soon.

18 cylinders. Holy cow. If the plug gap is .30 on all plugs, that would be over 5 inches of gap. (Just numbers, but kooky!!)

Uhhh....I think that's 0.030" for 0.55 total! You're off by an order of magnitude.

Hi,
I have enjoyed reading about your progress, however the outboard mounting height is still too low based on the appearance that the lower Driveshaft Housing Splash Plate is approximately in line with the tunnel. Actually, the underside of the Gear Housing Ventilation Plate (about 2 inches lower down, and above the propeller) should at least in line with the tunnel or a small amount higher. The mounting height must be at least such that none of the Driveshaft Housing is in contact with the water exiting the tunnel, or anyone riding in the stern will likely get quite a bath, and propoising will likely be a serious problem.

Joe

A couple of additional thoughts.
The propeller presently installed has a lower rake angle and appears to be uncupped. Considering the greater amount of aerated water generally seen with a tunnel design, a more modern higher rake and cupped blade propeller is likely in order for satisfaction. Some additional propeller installation pieces will be necessary though.
Having the propeller "vented" will also improve matters, especially considering the relatively short hull length combined with the heavier outboard.

Joe

Thanx for the reply Joe but now I'm confused. To set the motor hieght as you recomended I would have to raise the motor 3 1/4". This would put the top of the prop at the same level as the top of the drain plugs. It just seems high

I would like to get an extra prop or 2 to take with to Brazil the prop on it is #4B 65748 A1 17P. any recomendations would be welcome.
