So I went to Menard's and bought 2 storm door chain kits, which include the zinc coated spring. I also bought delrin pulleys to replace the UV damaged plastic ones by the motor. Thats some super helpfull instructions! I have this same steering set up in my little boat. Unfortunatly, if anything happens to it, I can't replace it. Are they still available in the states?

Yah, thanks Andreas. I re-read the whole thread and checked out the sites suggested. Here in Canada, that system is illegal to sell. You can have it in a boat, if it came with it, but if something happens to it, you have to replace the whole thing. BS really. So I just assume it is everywhere. But I forget that that the US government lets you guys be adults, and not make everything old, be be illegal.

I had never heard anyone suggest only one spring, as in the diagram. As far as I know, all Larsons came with a spring on both sides.

I've had people freak out about my steering with the pulleys and cables, but like you say, in the USA, there are no retroactive codes. We even let old cars on the road with mechanical brakes rather than hydraulic!

The theory on the single spring is that it will prevent a high speed wobble. With two springs there is a chance that the system will go crazy at high speed and the engine will move side to side the distance that the springs allow it to move. With one it won't do that. So the theory goes. I am going to stick with one spring and not test the two spring theory. And bolt every one of the attaching points: never screws. If a screw lets loose.....well drive with on hand on the throttle lever! LOL. Mike

I think some eye bolts are in my future. Not that the 1959 Lark 35HP is a wicked power machine, but I still want to be able to aim it where I want to go.
