TOPIC: Big Twin 35

Big Twin 35 12 years 3 months ago #55510

1957 Evinrude Big Twin 35. I traded for engine work on bike. I plan on installing it on the "mystery boat" when complete. It seems intact, with nothing broken. From the ring gear wear it looks well used, but still a clean unit. And it has a title! Thought yall might like to see it.

Did a quick polish on prop, it sure looks like brass.

Nice deal on the motor. There is only one bad thing about those brass props they are so heavy the like to knock out the shift dogs.I would go with a alumimum prop. Better safe then sorry having to change the shift dogs
I have 3 of those motors and they are good.
Check the compresson and go throug the carb. Then if she runs make sure its pumping it might need a new impeller and those are easy to change.

The reason they knock out the dogs is that when shifting out of gear the prop as Mike said is heavy, and they spin longer and with more weight

Many people will go from forward to reverse (or the other way around) without letting the prop stop spinning....hard to do when the boat is moving in the water' and the prop is wind milling' and you are about to hit the dock.

Another one Ive never hear of, Ive run brass all my life without any issues , I have heard people saying they wear out the gears too, again its never happened to me. all that being said, 35hp omc's can be bought for pennies, so run that brass!
