TOPIC: a BIG woody boat

a BIG woody boat 14 years 2 months ago #1070

Here's one BIG woody boat! These are glued laminated white oak frames for a US Navy AMS minesweeper built in 1952. The picture is at Peshtigo, WI where the frames were laminated. In the background is the lumber shed of Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co., neighbor to the laminator

Aerial view of the laminating plant at Peshtigo, WI. You can see numerous ship frames (ribs) on the ground. The Thompson Boat factory is in the middle of the picture.

Launching of a wooden AMS minesweeper in 1952. That's a 165 ft. woody boat!

Launching of a 224 ft. wooden MCM minesweeper in 1987. She is framed with glued laminated timber. I was involved in this laminating work!

Glued laminated frames being trucked from the laminating plant to the shipyard. I escorted many of these loads!

And thus it was that the Axis forces launched a program to develop a NEW weapon - the Ter-mine-ite. In the end it was a losing idea - they never could work out the bugs! :P
