I recently bought a 17' runabout that was repowered with a 1980's BMW straight 6 cylinder engine (170 ci, 165 hp) with a BMW Z stern drive. I have never seen one of these before and had to research online to find more info. It appears to be a pretty hi-end engine with aluminum head and block, hemi combustion chamber, and 4bbl carb. Does anyone have any experience with these engines or stern drives? Are parts available? Is it worth rebuilding?

Apparently Mercury Marine still builds and sells Diesel marine engines that are of original BMW design. Finally, diesel or gas and Z-drive parts are still apparently available from Mercury Marine.
