TOPIC: OMC stern drive circa 1964

OMC stern drive circa 1964 3 years 3 weeks ago #144171

Hey, I am adopting a 22 ft wooden speed boat that has a Buick V-6 engine and OMC outdrive. I assume it is also from 1964. The bullet on the outdrive is cracked. I am considering abandoning the OMC outdrive and replace it with a newish MerCruiser. I have no clue what it takes to do this. I am just starting my research. Suggestions appreciated. This is not an immediate endeavor, I do not even have the rig yet, but I hope to look at it later in the summer of 2021.

Installing a MerCruiser involves building a new transom & motor mounts.
I should have the gear case you need on hand. Best to verify the engine/intermediate & upper units are good before you go too far.

Thanks Jim. I have done some more digging since my initial question and now see why a MerCruiser outdrive just can't be slapped on this thing. Interesting concept and details on the OMC ! When I get the boat in late April or early May I will do some more in depth investigation. Might need a new transom anyway - I see some past repairs probably due to rot.

I have the beast at home now. On the engine there are markings "OMC" and 310911 and 310912. Apparently it's a 150 HP Buick V-6. The only markings on the outdrive are "OMC" and 379408.

1st 3 years were 150hp V6. Then they went to 2bbl carb & got 155hp.

Look for metal data plate on engine block. I don't remember where on V6 but I'd start looking near starter. I can check my 1969 this weekend to verify where it is.

Gear case will be 15:23 ratio.

Is home still TC area?

On my 1969, data plate is on the front of the right cylinder head.

I don't remember seeing a data plate. I'll look again next time I am home. Minnesota is home but I am rarely home. In the past seven years I have only been home about 17% of the time. I am losing my job soon, so I will be able to go home full time.

Hi I have an electric shift 1965 on ebay right now, it's was on a 4 cylinder but you can swap the lower half to get yours going.
