Someone on here or another site said something about liquid mask instead of masking tape. I'm going to check on that.I'm trying to find some vintage accessories to set in the boat for car shows when I pull it behind my 65 truck. I have some other stuff and thought this cooler would be something I could also use at the lake.Here's the other things I've got so far.The cushions and rope fenders were in the Crestliner when I got it.I'm going to be on the look out for some old wooden skis like my dad used to ski on. (Adirondack?)

Thanks Bob,I figure I'll not blast close to the writing and just fog in around the writing with paint if I can find the fluid masking. I definitely don't want to lose the writing, littlefin.

VERY cool cooler... Yes, the lettering HAS To stay!

None of the liquid masks I've worked with would stand up to any kind of blasting. If it were mine, I'd make a cover for the text area, with nice rounded edges... Blast the rest of the cooler, but leave that whole area (including the red) untouched, then paint... It would look like a decal, but you'd be SURE you didn't damage the coolest part of it!

That's what I was thinking about the masking Andrew. Just blast around it. I also thought of taping tight around the writing and leaving the red alone inside the letters. If I could find a red real close in color,I'd be happy. Ford Cardinal red and a GM red are close. Rustoleum Safety red is a little too orange. I know the original red has darkened up some. Do you know where to get the liquid mask, Andrew? jim

They've got it at most arts/crafts stores, and any place that sells airbrush supplies. It'll either be called liquid masking or liquid frisket. I can guarantee you that none of it I've ever run across will stand up to any kind of blasting, though- It's just too soft for that! It's like rubber cement that's a little tougher than 'normal'...

Bham Rick has used this product with good results but it was on raised script on his Dorsett San Juan. I'd either take it to a company that does vinyl transfers before blasting or do a tracing to have an exact copy. You could also take it to an auto paint supplier before blasting and have them custom mix match the original red if you choose to mask around the script.

Thanks to all for your ideas on this. I'm going to check at a place I know local that does vinyl decals.I've decided I'd really like to fix all the little dents, pits and scratches and paint the whole thing and make it look new. I'm just not into patina lol. I want it to be fresh to use on my boats.When I get done with it I'll post some pics. jim

Well I finally got back on this and decided to tape off the original decal. I first sand blasted it. Then I fixed every dent and blemish I could see(and still missed a few. lol)Next I primed it with SEM high build primer"good stuff". Watersanded and painted it with Rustoleum Regal red. Finally,I will touch up/fill in the letters with a white paint marker later. Some pics....

Sorry jim, I haven't checked back on this post in a while. I used rustoleum 7765 regal red. It matched up closer to the old color better than their safety red, but the red on yours looks lighter than mine. Man,I feel for you if your going to tape off the writing and eskimo

,but that's what make them pop. Yes mine has the bottle opener on the side like yours,but is held on by a hook and a screw.

Thanks, mine is likey faded from use. That color you used looks great!
The gasket is still good, but under it is a lot of rust. Galvanized inside.
My mother remembers this thing, as I got it from my grandparents "estate" after my grandmother passed. Glad I kept it.
Apparently these were the styrofoam cooler of the day. I may go the decal route, as I want to keep the Eskimo.

great looking coolers guys,look what i found,a 1950's "camp cooler",in great shape im going to take it to buffalo for the boat show,and keep our sodas cool.
it has a couple of scratches and a ding or two,but even the seal is still good.
the inside is galvanized and good condition,john
