I have a Ride Guide steering system that I was going to put in my Thompson, but the cable is about a foot too short. This system was made by Mercury and came from a Sea Ray. The cable is marked 14 ft 6 inches but I can't find a part number on it. It is a rack and pinion system and on that housing the part number is 48226 B. I sent an e-mail to Joe Ferguson at Ferguson- Poole to see if they have any.
I have gone on line, but there are a lot of brands out there and I don't know for sure what will work, if any. I need one about 16 ft.
If anyone has one they would part with or know where I could find one, let me know.

That is what I have been hearing from several different sources, including Joe Poole. I ran across one on e-bay and bought it last night. Pondrocket44 showed some interest in the shorter one, so this may just work out good for both of us. By what I have seen by taking it apart, it does look like a good, solid, simple system with few moving parts so it should hold up well as long as you keep it greased with the correct type of grease. Thanks for the input. That is what is so great about this site - everyone is here to help!!!

In the process of assisting "grumple', I discovered that my steering cables are actually 14ft & 18ft when measuring from the large female threaded 'nut' at the engine end to the larger threaded part that threads into the quicksilver rack.
The part numbers end in A16 & A20, but are stamped 14ft & 18ft.
I also have one stamped 16ft, so it was probably an A18, but I don't have the box.
These are all NOS.
Perhaps with this correction, someone might need one fo these rare to find goodies.
