TOPIC: Dr Frankenmerc's 2017 Monster

Dr Frankenmerc's 2017 Monster 7 years 4 weeks ago #131596

Besides rebuilding (6) inline-6 Tower of Power (TOP) Mercs for customers,...I spent more than a little time creating my latest Monster TOP.
I am attaching a few pictures of the beast.
Review the pictures, and let me know what you think my creation is.
A ridiculous amount of time and modifications were required, and IMHO,...It is not a fiscally responsible project.
I still think it is pretty cool, and probably a "One Only" in the 'World of Mercury Magic'

Thumbs up! Too much time and money??? Hard to debate when you really just want something and you can do it! We only live once. I don't have expertise, but I think I am noticing the obvious....added power trim on the short shaft...no recoil or choke sticking out of hood... like I thought those old motors had... then the distributor looks more modern than my 1965 and that cowl is older... then way beyond my pay grade is that suspicious cut out of back hood screen... so what crazy powerhead are you making room for? Will this throwback monster make the G3 even faster than the 150XS??? Love that you post your mad ideas from your laboratory! Can't wait to hear you announce "It's Alive"...or post a running video some day. Thanks - sweet "creation". I am sure I missed the good stuff!

Doc

Looks pretty sweet. I'll give you a call soon when i get a chance , have a few questions for you on my 650 builds. I like the plug wire attachment to the block? Looms? Is that a custom part or on the shelf? Keep up the great work.

The looms are a common part on the beastly Merc I stuffed into the early 1000 cowls.
Master Ed Mc knows what I did, but I would LOVE to hear who else can post an educated guess as to what I have assembled.

boatmaniac nailed it.
It is a 1350. LOTS of work to make it fit in the pre-'65, much narrower, cowlings.

The "Doc", and his IL6's are like me, with V Twin old Harleys, are "Mad scientist" . Might look "stock" to some..?..BUT..just guss whats "inside" !
Yep doc, got ya on the beard, and been a LONG winter! And doc built me crank up rebuild a 115 back to a 135 on the Flatty. Some day we just might actually "go out the the boats", but more fun in the "build". Anyone can drive'em, but the fun is in "BUILDING IT"!

So, it seems i had a lucky guess? Not really. Yesterday my good friend and Mercury mechanic came by to talk about Doc`s Frankenmerc`s motors and the possibility of building a weird motor from the pile of parts and powerheads that laying around in my shed. I showed him the picture of Doc`s latest creation and he said we can do something with a 1350 too. We finally decided to use the short shaft mid merc 1350 and put the C6 powerhead and Twister cowling on. My friend { Ruud Brouwers } will make it a running motor despite the lack of the original race midsection and lower.

Here is a picture of another "frankenmerc" build in process.
1350, T-1 block, T2x carburetors & crankcase, Twister exhaust, DSH, & SSM.
I have all the gaskets & parts, except the elusive distributor drive belt, (which I am having fabricated)
Not the correct carburetors for a true C-6,...But when was the last 'technically correct' build by ole doc F???
The beastly L-6 behind my C-6ish beast, is an ADI fired T2x.
Please post pictures of your C-6 as you progress.

That's a miracle in itself! They're all getting so bad nowadaze. Maybe you'll come across an NOS or freshwater lightly-used harness on ebay.

Gotta give it to the Doc, the creativity is Boundless! Must have been eating an extra few gallons of pickles and ice cream this year. Or maybe it was the long, wet, cold winter indoors that inspired his Genius!

N-Yuk, n-yuk, n-yuk,...
I am truly a Mercaholic - to the bone!!!,...And I LOVE creating Mercury Magic.
I hope to find time soon to write up a full explanation of what was required to create this beast.

In response to Headley's post,...If you purchase a later model Mercury (not CDI-e) internal harness, [84-69236A1 not a CDI-e 414-2770] or find a decent used inline-6 harness from a '68 thru early '79, you can trim off the square corners of the plug,...And cut your '62-'64 internal harness's square retainer with (4) machine screws,...in half - horizontally,...Leave the lower half loosely installed, slide in your later model internal harness, and lock it in place with the top half of the square retainer.
Tah-Dah,...You've got a sweet internal & external harness connection.
That is what is hiding inside the lower pan of my latest Monster.

You can compliment this with a used '68 thru early '79 external harness, or a new external harness - a CDI-e 474-9550, or possibly an NLA Merc # 84-822253T20. Either will work just fine, but I prefer the wire quality of the CDI-e products.
Call or post for further details.

Tip o' the hat to the good doc. A marvelous creation, a work of art. Pretty known I'm not a huge Merc fan, I've had a few and relied on you fellas to pull me through some tough areas. The tools required for some of the fixin's are out of my realm. I'm a shade tree mechanic at best. If it can't be worked on with an 8" crescent and a screwdriver I take my toys and go home.
That being said I marvel at the work you do. KUDOS and a karma point.

I haven't offered it up for sale yet, but already have a few folks inquiring.
I'm not sure what I will eventually do with it.

I've also had a few fellow Mercaholics suggesting I change the wrap to an 800FGS wrap without the decals on my '62 1000 wrap.
I like that idea too, but need to track down a straight one.
I 'might' have one coming out of Seattle, but I haven't been hands on yet to see condition.
I have attached a pair of pictures to compare to.
So-o-o-o-o,...My fellow classic enthusiasts,...What do you all think???

Got a better idea. Keep the side wrap with Merc, and a no Merc on the hat. Rather see Merc on the sides, than the hat. What ya think?

Such Heresy!

The chrome letters are the Holy Grail of Merc emblems since (IIRC) they only appeared on the 1961 Dockbuster 800. At any rate, got to agree that more than one set of identifiers is redundant.

I just think the Dockbuster letters along with the black-n-stainless cowling look really sanitary and Very Cool with the Phantom Black motor.

Cheers...........ed

Doc,

Seems to me you made up your mind already with #2 due to you painted the Top Cowl already. My choice is #1 without the Mercury on top cowl.

Dr Frankenmerc's 2017 Monster 7 years 2 weeks ago #131819

I haven't made up my mind yet.
#2 image is just a computer modified change to #1.
One reason not to use a 1000 top hat, is because it would have a rewind assembly, and unless I remove it, and mill off all the related castings to clear the 1350 flywheel, I would also have to fill in the hole for the rewind rope & the choke.
Granted,...I could remove all the chrome letters and fill in their holes of the 800DR hat, but I really Like the chrome letters.
I'm leaning towards keeping the chrome letters, and going to an 800 wrap. (#2)

Wow that is a really good project. #2 all the way. #1 is redundant and not as sleek. I have never seen a 800 painted black with chrome letters on top. It REALLLY looks good Thom. And the 1350 inside just makes it over the top. You knocked this one out of the park.

If you dont do #2 I will call you to change your mind.

Dr Frankenmerc's 2017 Monster 7 years 2 weeks ago #131828

Thanks everybody!!!
Keep those thoughts coming.
AND,...If you just happen to have a pristine '61 800FGS or 800DR wrap 'laying around,...The old doctor would love to hear just how much of Solomon's Gold would be required to own it.
I might have one soon, but I doubt this will be my 'Last Rodeo'.

One other addition to this build will be the addition on the pin striping original to the '62-'63 1000. They were white, but I like Nautilus's comment of "never too much chrome" and am considering using chrome pin striping.
Well????

The raised ridges should be polished to match the chrome letters and trim ring. Adding chrome pinstripes may not look as good as polished raised ridges. I am a photographer by trade and deal with design and peoples image for a living. Mercury had some of the best design teams at the time working on their motors. Thats one of the reason we collect them is they just look better than the competition.

Now I appreciate when people modify the look of their Mercury motors. But when someone can modify the motor and make it look like it could have been a production motor that is even better. The black wrap with polished raised ridges matching the chrome grab handle and MERCURY letters looks nearly production. Those chrome MERCURY letters are the Diamond in the wedding ring. Let the diamond stand proud and just accent it with similar details.

This photo is perfect IMO. It could have rolled off the Mercury line just like that.

I think that the raised ridges should be sanded front to rear with 180 wet and dry to look more like merc would have done. JMHO

Yes sanded front to back like Dave said. Would be very sharp and what Merc would have done.
