Hello All,

I ran into Miss America IX owner Charles Mistele at daybreak on Sunday and helped get her ready to show after the deluge on Saturday.

Later at the awards ceremony Charles was awarded Best Racing Boat for his Miss America IX.

Designed and built by Gar Wood in 1930 Miss America IX was the first boat to exceed the 100 mph barrier.

She originally was powered by twin Liberty Packard V-12s. Miss America IX is now has GM 4-bolt big block 454s

Charles took me out for a little spin on Lake Dora and it was quite a thrill. Did all I could just too hold on and keep breathing at the same time. At 70 mph the inhaling part is easy but the exhaling was a challenge.

Took a short video coming back to dock:

Thanks,
Terry

Hello Bill,

Yeah we missed you Saturday night. Charles was able to make it to O’Keefe’s Pub and gave his presentation on Miss America IX to the FGC group. Jag and Julia made it too and Glen showed all his videos and it was lots of fun.

Miss America IX was an amazing boat to see and to go out on her and experience the G forces was sweeeeeet!

Yeah Skip, taIk about being in the right place at the right time.

There is lots of stuff out there on the Miss America boats and this one is pretty good with Charles telling the story about this historical boat.

This is pretty cool too:

Thanks,
Terry

nothing like the sound of a pair of big blocks running at speed to get the hart pumping reminds of my youth on the St Johns river and seeing boats with big motors and open exhaust
