TOPIC: Steering cable replacement

I know this has been covered here before so I apologize. I couldn't find it through the search. Is the hardware store plastic coated 3/16 galvanized cable good to use for the steering or do I need a marine grade cable, or are they the same. My cable on the Aristocraft is getting cracked and rusting near the engine. What do you guys think?thanks,jim
