TOPIC: Standard old cable steering

I know my steering set up,is set up wrong. My ends of the cable terminate on springs that are attached to the motor steering bracket. There has to be a schematic someplace, showing exactly how it should be properly done. Is there a post on this somewhere? I tried a search and came up empty handed. This winter is time to get all these little things squared away.
