TOPIC: Fiberglass Boat with Mahogany Deck

Fiberglass Boat with Mahogany Deck 1 year 7 months ago #147106

New member here, have enjoyed reading for the last year or so. Signed up yesterday.

Would anyone here have any idea who built the boat in the photo I posted. It's a 14 footer. I took the photo off of the Free-Boat.com websight and have been looking for information for a couple of years. It was at Houghton Michigan. The idea of a fiberglass boat with a mahogany deck really appeals to me. You can have the low maintenance of a fiberglass hull plus the beauty of a mahogany deck.

Thanks! Todd W Temperance, Michigan

It doesn't really look like mahogany to me but since you have to remove it all and re-deck, mahogany would be the way to go. Be sure to replace the framework...save the pieces as patterns.

Here's a photo log of a topside re-deck job I did a couple years ago. It might give you a few ideas. Glad to have you join the site and good luck!

Thank you for your response. Mahogany was just a guess, the correct term would probably be mulch. Would you have any names to suggest for builders that built fiberglass boats with wood decks?

I've done a few over the years. My personal opin is putting separate strips is a PIA. You could go with strips if you want and use a good adhesive. Other option would be a solid sheet of mahogany like Luan.

Either leave it solid or take a router and cut file lines to make fake boards.
If you can save the side gunnel strips that would be a bonus.
FYI you will never get it to look like Jan's. The guy is a pro and knows his sh....

Many builders of fiberglass boats started with wooden seats and decks and trim. It was very common, especially for the wooden boat companies that started a fiberglass line: Larson; Shell Lake; and many, many others. Even MFG which started out making fiberglass hulls used wooden deck and seating for their first couple of years.
