TOPIC: How to price a classic?

Hi fellow boaters, I'm thinking about selling my 1965 Sea King 14ft Runabout in very good condition. What is a good method to put a fair price on the older boats?

IMHO,...Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
Set your price based on your desired sale price, and slowly reduce that price until you are uncomfortable in going any lower.
If no one bites,...Try it again a month or so later.
Don't give away something you have spend time and money on, unless you get to where you "just want it gone".

I have found that presentation is everything.

Selling the same boat:

1) Parked next to an old barn with a tarp half on it and stuff piled inside on a cloudy day; $1,500 OBO.

2) Meet the prospective buyer at the dock, boat in the water and idling, clean as a whistle on a beautiful sunny day and take him for a ride. Let him drive when out in the open water; $3,500 firm.

Nobody ever got $10 by asking for $5. Be willing to let them walk away. Don't be surprised if they call you in a day or two.

I also have been trying to come up with a price for my 59 Playmaster. That over the top 1957 Herter sold for $6400. That is the price range I was thinking for my Playmaster. So regardless of what I think or hope it is worth only the buyers will determine cash value. I do agree it will be more "sail able" if tied to a dock at a pricey marina.

On the Corvette forum it is not allowed or looked down on when a person jumps on a for sale thread with disparaging remarks about price. I have seen that here multiple times. It helps no one and potentially hurts seller/buyers. I think that a lot of the cool fiberglass boats have been under valued. But I have been wrong before!

Inquiring about the estimated value of a boat is one thing...and a
perfectly logical question to ask prior to listing a boat for sale.

But a "For Sale Thread" is something different. Actually, there really shouldn't be any For Sale threads. That's why we have the Glassifieds...a posting without an opportunity for comments, good or bad. However, once a person advertises a boat for sale in the forum, the price, like everything else, is fair game that will elicit responses in the form of opinions...to which everyone is entitled. Don't want to hear opinions? List boats For Sale in the Glassifieds where they belong.

Personally, I think any/all "for sale" threads should be deleted.
