TOPIC: 1973 MFG Gypsy 50hp Prop Suggestion

Hi everyone. Looking for a little help please. We have a 1973 MFG 15' Gypsy trihull. It has a 1982 50hp Mercury outboard. I'd like to know where to start with a prop size. We mostly idle around, but I'd like a good all around prop. Thank you.

My "best guess" would probably be somewhere around a 15P or 17P. Do you have any current stats on what you've been running? You'll want your Wide Open Throttle RPM to be at the max operating range for your motor.

Years ago I had a 50 hp on a 15 ft light plywood runabout. The boat dry weight was probably about 400lbs (I am assuming that is lighter than your tri hull). If I remember right I had a 13" pitch aluminum to start with but ran across a deal on a 11" stainless that I couldn't pass up. I got about 30 mph with both,I am assuming because of the lack of flex in the stainless, but got more out of the hole with the stainless. It was running out at about 5500 to 5800 RPM, about where it should have been. Here is the boat that it was on.
