TOPIC: dont't now what johnson

i found this engine for sale but they don't have a serial number or anything like that. Does someone now what outboard motor this is. which type, how many horse power and from what year it is

It should a have the mod# cast into the top of the flywheel

I don't know the difference between the motors, but it might be one of the following:

4.2 HP 1937 Johnson DT-37
4.2 HP 1938 Johnson DT-38
5.0 HP 1939 Johnson DT-39
5.0 HP 1940 Johnson DT-10

Looks like its missing the recoil starter and tiller handle?

Actually, going by the scale of the lower unit, I'd say it's the HD model, not the DT model. The HD was the 2.5hp version, similar, same era, but smaller.
