I've been on a role with my 3hp's, so I pulled out my Dad's original 1956 Evinrude . This is the only motor that I grew up with. The recoil spring broke back in the early 70's, so we used the wrap around method 'til around the mid 80's or so, when it was sort of retired. It was not run or even started for over 30 years. So I rebuilt the magneto, coils, points, condensers. Rebuilt the carb. Changed the head gasket and water pump impeller...I had it running in the barrel yesterday! Seems just fine. Now I need to change the recoil spring. Does anything else fit? I have a few parts motors now, 5.5, 15 & 25hp...or are new springs available? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

A new spring should be available from just about any marine shop. the spring form a 5.5 recoil will fit if you have a spare, just be careful removing it as they like to bite!

Check with a dlr, see if they have a 0395460 spring in stock. It's used on a ton of motors, and is listed as the replacement spring for a 1960 3hp. Should be the same as your '56.

www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0395460

'56 parts have wierd, old numbers with letter in 'em and I don't have the interchange for a "41B197" spring, but I expect the newer # will fit.

OK, Great, still available. 3-35hp, wow, I do have an early 50's Johnson 25hp, which still has the recoil starter, I may try to see if that spring will work... Worth a try I guess. Thanks guys.

Recoil springs are enough of a pain to work on, that I wouldn't pull one out of a motor I had ANY interest in using someday!

And if you ARE taking a spring out, be careful! Wear eye protection!!

OK, Thanks, good advice. I selected the '52 25hp Johnson recoil, because it's been a carcass for over 35 years, and I'm finally convinced that it's never going back together. Also I have five 1955 Johnson/Evinrude 25hp BigTwins, and the recoil on the early one is different...
So, after mounting on the motor it worked at first, but after pulling several times, the rope still recoils, but it doesn't turn the engine over... I stopped there and haven't been back to it yet...
