For a 1984 3 cyl 70 hp Evinrude, what gear oil would be recommended, besides the OMC brand?

when i worked at an omc dealer at that time..1984-1985 we used 80-90 gear lube in everything BUT the old electric shift motors.. they took their own type of oil.. we would get it by the 5 gal. bucket.. Hypoid 80-90 type oil

Ditto Norm. 80/90 gear lube for the straight shifter. OMC special stuff for the electric shifters.

You can pick up a good-quality "Hi-Vis" marine-rated gear oil from most Wal-Marts in their little marine section. Grab a pump while you're at it, makes it much easier to get the oil in.

My local NAPA carries marine gear oil as well.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure. I once owned an old OMC I/O and it took 80/90 in the upper case but Hi Vis in the lower case. For my 70 hp I'll go with a good 80/90 marine gear oil.

Yep I get mine from Wally World and like Ed said, get the pump, it's only like $7 or $8 bucks and well worth it. Makes life much easier.
