I have three old Johnsons, none of which I have gotten running yet, but today or tomorrow may be the day. Just got the pressure tank in usable condition. Motors are a '54 5.5 hp, '55 5.5 hp, and '57 7.5 hp.

I've heard/read that TCW-3 is fine to use but had on oldtimer tell me at a recent meet not to use TCW-3. Owner's manual says to use SAE 30 at 16:1. Of course, TCW-3 didn't exist in '55.

What wisdom can you folks share?

Thanks

I have some old J/Rudes and run them at 25-1 TWC with zero problems.

TCW was designed for water cooled outboards to reduce the exhaust port carbon buildup and ring sticking that 30wt. was causing. I use Pennzoil full synthetic TCW3 in my antique outboards, and they love it. PLEASE DO NOT listen to people who may tell you that you can use a leaner ratio due to better modern oils!!!! The motors you list (5.5, 7.5 hp) have PLAIN bearings, not roller and needle bearings, and require QUANTITY, not quality, to last. Just like auto engines, the crank and rods need a film of oil to keep them lubed. Unlike auto engines, they have no oil pump. Keep mixing 16:1, use any good TCW3, they will outlast your grandkids.

Yes, the j/e's 10hp and larger have roller and needle bearings, and can run leaner.

Thanks, Kerry. That is what I had heard until the oldtimer advised against the TCW-3. I went and found some non-detergent SAE 30 anyway. Had to visit a few stores to find it.
