TOPIC: Slides/Video: The Fastest G3 in the West

Dr. Frankenmerc's Wild Thanggg and her 1500XS is running hotter than ever. We captured photos and video of a few of Thom's runs at the lake, and wanted to share them with the G3 fans.

If you own an OMC, you better sit down before viewing... we don't want you spilling your popcorn when your jaw hits the floor (especially you NUT! ).

Thanks for posting that video of Thom's G-3 Dean! That is one FAST G-3 and Thom did a great job on the set-up with that huge Merc 150XS! I would really like to see him race Davis' G-3.

If this link works. Here's a wimpy OMC with half the cylinders, half the cubic inches, half
the horse power making a pass. It's not going as fast but it's not going half the speed either.

His OMC would have to spot the "Doctors" Mercury 40 horse power and two cylinders.

You know Ole "GLASSPARNUT" there isn't many of us OMC people left.
It's good some of us stick together. The "Doctor" does have one fast &
well set up G-3. And I do like the looks of a in line 6 cylinder Mercury
on a G-3. Oh No Maybe "The Dark Side" is getting to me. But then I remember
what one special person "On The Dark Side" had to do one morning in Florida.
Keeps me on the proper color side of things.

I'm sure that this confession will leave the OMC girls stuttering and stumbling over what to say next,...BUT facts are facts:

My motor is actually a somewhat stock 1987 115 purring comfortably inside the fancy 1500xs cowlings.
With that in mind, and the factoid that NUT's squatty white thing in 110 cowlings is actually a 140 hp,...by standards back when the 1500xs was what it is, and 110 hp by today's standards,...I have a mere 5 horse-power more than he does.
That being said,...Ole NUT is STILL going to need to go on every diet in the land if he ever expects to get close enough to the transom of Wild Thanggg to be in the same picture frames.

My "wimpy" OMC hasn't lost many races. I've only raced G-3s I know I can
beat! I don't remember ever thinking I could beat a G-3 with a Mercury that
had 40 more horse power than mine. By the way, It was not me who issued the
challenge on the Suwannee River. I don't pick on those smaller than me. I just win
bets and poor Jim has really paid for that one. He never knew how expensive it would be.
It was and still is all in good fun.

If what you say is true and I have no reason to doubt you. You and Bill have got to
try and get together sometime and as he says "It will be fun".
Five horse power one way or the other will not
make that big of a difference. It will be set up and weight. Bill is a big boy! and he has
a center deck G-3. I personally think the open model G-3 is lighter and faster.
You however are advertising 150hp. Bill is advertising 110hp. Even IF you win and you
should. What will it look like from the shore line?
Maybe you should put your 115hp cover back on.
As you describe it, you and Bill are really a "spy vs Spy" thing. Who knows what the other is
up to. Keep it fun and too bad we did not meet while you visited Florida.

Nut IS the instigator!...& talk about a fair test? I was so tired of the bravado in the Team OMC camp and the main NUT that I have challenged Nut to a race next years meet on the west coast
I was going to run a Merc1100 110hp( a little closer match) but I will run a Merc1000 100hp (rated at the flywheel) from the junk pile I have never even heard run yet against the Nuts 110hp (rated at the prop) thats supposed to be "the hot nut" around here to crack.....hahhahaha.... so I give Nut the hp advantage & will Spank his OMC

I think we should make this race between you and Davis a little more interesting. This idea is only if it is not against the rules here. I propose the Members putting up some money for this race next year between the two of you,....OMC VS Mercury.
I will be the first to commit to this and will put up $50.00 on your Merc Powered G-3 to say that YOU will BEAT Davis G-3!
Whatever money is donated will go to the winner, in a "Winner take all" race.

Bruce I love that boat of yours , whats the length and weight, I missed one on Portland Craigslist several months ago by a few hours.

what top end speeds are you getting with your boat

16 feet - It's real light. With no motor or rigging it's something like 500 lbs. The best speed I got was 42 mph GPS by myself with fresh gas - one tank of gas & no "junk" aboard. That was with the original unrestored Starflite 75 running a 2 bladed 10.25 X 13 cup. 4,000RPM at 40 mph. Too tall for the engine. The transom is getting replaced right now & I'm putting a 1968S 100HP powerhead under the hood. The engine will have high compression heads from a 1973 Rude and a home brewed Pertronix ignition. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much - for every MPH over a certain speed - it is diminishing returns...... I'd be thrilled by anything over 45mph.

The "100" emblem shown on the hood is not original, I found it on ebay & couldn't resist putting it on the hood before the engine transplant.

So-o-o-o,...To be fair I will install a set of '87 115 cowlings for the Big Race with my 'spy' adversary,...NUT.

We need to be careful what we say so far in advance to next year's ShastaFest.
If we're not careful poor ole NUT will be all stressed out and in the hospital on IV anti-depressants and unable to show up.
We need to 'just show up' and have on hand one of those portable defibrillators, for when the NUT 'has the big one'.

you'd be surprised how often I'm told that by hardcore Merc folks. They just usually won't admit it in public. I actually planned to use a '63 Merc 650 on there - but after dropping one on the transom, it just didn't look right. The boat and motor didn't compliment one another. So the 650 will go on another tail - fin boat.

All kidding aside, if you or anyone else want's to come to Shasta next June, We'd sure enjoy having you with us. It's a relaxing and fun weekend to BS with all of your boat friends. A chance to see you & Nut in the same pond would be priceless. Let me know if you want a "heads up" when the reservations for the weekend open up.

I know you were holding onto one Wild Thangg shot... as not to scare our OMC friends, but I think its time to lay it out on the table. JC says he doesn't pick on anyone smaller than him. The OMC camp should know you are just as much a gentleman and wouldn't think of such a thing either:

I saw the picture of your boat under "banner". I had not remembered that you mounted
your Mercury on a CMC trim unit. You should have the "hot set-up". Everything on and
about your G-3 looks perfect. One of the best I've seen and let me tell you we here in
the Florida Glasspar Club have some nicely restored G-3's. I agree with G3jim how about
a full report with pictures of that G-3 running. You must have it broken in by now.

Thanks for compliments and kind words.

I have 7.1 hours running hours on the water now... if you count early driveway time... maybe 8 hours total on the rebuild. Every run out there, its running a little stronger...

I am still searching for the right prop. I have a tried several from the Frankenmerc lab. 24P (2 blade/small diameter), 23P, 21P, 19P (2 and 3 blade)... I have a 17P cupped to try next. To this point, the 19P is my favorite. I am seeing about 100 RPM WOT increase every trip out, as the rings seat I am guessing. A 5500 RPM burst on the last trip out with Thom. I am still running 24:1 mix for another 3 hours (two more tanks).

I am heading out to Mason Lake this weekend for an ACBS PNW get together. I have my camera charged up and ready to go. If I find someone that can take some photos for me, I hope to get some action shots with rapid-fire stills and maybe some video. I will post them Sunday if I someone can help me out with the camera on the water.
