I'm wondering if The coil voltage 'could' be feedback from a closed set of points?? O2 or Jim Sprig??

Eactly my thoughts. I am just an old auto tech, street rodder/hot rodder and new to outboard engines and wondering what part the rectifier would play in this situation?

i just tapped on the cut off/mercury switch as jim advised and tried to start. it immediately tried to start. i turned the key to run and it stalled. it was very quick less than a second. i tried to restart but my battery almost immediately died out. i am charging it overnite and will try again in the morning. hopefuuly this is the problem, where could i buy a new mercury switch? ron

disconnect the gray mercury switch.then try the gray ones gave trouble i am suprised they are still around.

Ok, according to my schematic, when the switch closes during an "event", it shorts the point sets together shutting off the engine. You need a normally "open" switch for normal operation. You can remove the switch as Dave suggests and hope you don't have another event. Or, if the tapping returned the mercury to it's home postion and the motor starts after the battery is fully charged, leave it alone.....and hope you don't have another event. I don't have a switch......sorry.

Ron, if you will go to the third post on page one, (or the 19th), all you have to do is unhook that switch. Leave the wires coming in from the front, and re-tighten the terminal screws. It really doesn't NEED replaced, at least to test it. That switch was unhooked, but still on the motor when I bought my '62 Model 700, and I never did replace it! Just tryin' to help you out buddy. ;)

Hi Ron,' I'm not a Merc expert but I have a feeling it is in the distributor some were. Rotor? Mine come apart one day on my Merc 700. Hence no spark.

(Thats a safety switch that grounds out the ignition system to shut the motor off if you hit something that kicks the motor up.)

mark if you read my earlier post thats exactly what happened. i hit something in the hudson river when i was up at franks. at first i thought i spun the hub. the motor did not stall though. i was at full speed and after i hit the object it slowed down to a troll speed. when i tried to power up it just revved and would only move at a trolling speed. i trolled back to the dock and dropped franks son off. i did not stop the engine but went right back out and it powered up as if nuthin had happened. the next time i tried to start it was when i wanted to winterize it last week and it would not start. i'm pretty confident now that it is that switch. we'll see tomorrow. ron

just look up under the top cowl above the distributer and look for it and see if it is broken.not hard.to check if it slipped needs removalof belt.

Ron,
If you conclude that the mercury switch is the culprit and you want to replace it even though most folks simply disgard them,...I more than likely have a spare, or two, or three.

The rectifier converts the AC voltage made by the stator to DC volts to charge the boat battery.
Interesting thought O2,...And I am not sure, but I suspect this ignition would still work with a pretty weak battery - Jim??
I know that the late '69s-'79 CDI fired Mercs are more dependent on a hot battery with constant voltage.

Not necessarily Doc.....remember, you are basically running 2 automotive systems in these beasts. Those starters will draw enough juice away from the coils to not allow enough saturation and cranking rpms at the same time ( keep in mind the amount of compression also ).

Thanks for confirming that Jim.
I wasn't sure, and hadn't even considered it until O2's inquiry regarding the rectifier suggested a low battery as a possibility.
It certainly makes sense with the starter draw and compression factors for sure.

just got home from pennsy and ran over to the boat. i was so anxious i didn't even let my wife in the house first,lol. turned the key and she fired right up. whoop whoop! so i guess i'll leave that mercury switch on. thanks again guys for all the help. mark hit it right on the head from the beginning about the mercury switch. i never disconnected it from the screws onlt from the holder. then sgrig told me to tap on it and thats whats did the trick. ron

i will garantee if you had a problem with the mercury switch you will have it again. replace it with a newer version may have to modify the wire length.they are much better even used ones.

Remember the old Chevy starters with the 2 wires going to the solenoid? The one marked "S" was for your cranking/starting cycle. It bypassed the ballast in the ign circuit to allow full batt voltage to the coil during cranking for sufficient coil saturation. Otherwise, the thing would pop off just as you released the key from the crank position.....remember that??

I sure remember. We run a '55 Nomad with a 427ci.Hot starts were always a issue until we installed a ford style solenoid that now provides a true 12+ volts with little lose to the starter solenoid "I" terminal.

I did the same with my 23t. I run a 406 sbc and have the ford solenoid under my dash, not too far from my MSD box. Built it like that right from the start. Never had a problem with a hot start.

Also had an '86 GMC pickup with a small block and headers with a ford solenoid mounted on the chassis rail forward of the starter.

No problem towing much with that little car, it has lots of torque. Problem is getting those rear tires on a wet, algae covered boat ramp...

Nice hot rod ya got there. One of these days, I'm gonna build a tear drop.
