Most of the time I use a ford exploder,but for decades and from time to time now, I use my 65 f-100.(The boat was the reason for getting the truck in 1985)

Short trips I use an 04 Chevy Trailblazer with an inline 6.
Long Trips I use my 4 dr 4wd '05 F250 diesel. Its my daily driver and on 35" tires I get 27mpg at 63mph. |

81 Chevy Scottsdale. Jim L...period caps are the coolest
 21 years newer than the boat, but I love it. It was built for towing a big starcraft fishing boat in 83. Oil cooler, deeper gear, sway bars, 350 .030 over, receiver hitch.

OH Great! First of all you show off your fancy Dorsett and now the beautiful Olds. Sure know how to make a guy feel great. Up until last week I used my pristine Cherokee, my baby.
If I had time to go out now I would be stuck with the wife's Chrylser van  All in good fun. Cal

It's not period correct, but I love my F-150 Super Cab. 4.6L V8, and drives/tows like a dream. It's the first full sized truck I've owned in 25 years.

I built my truck from junk parts. I would drive it across country now. It is a straight 300 6 cylinder with a five speed overdrive with 3.55 gears. I will pull anything. I can put a ton of wood pellets on it and it don't squat. My guess I get around 17-18 mpg all day long. I've been driving it 5 years now and it has never used a drop of oil. I will do anything a new truck will do without payments.
 The tires are a cheap size. (235-75-15)  And best of all it Ford tough. I've used Ford in my business and never even thought about trade in until it was over 300,000 miles. This one has 127,000 right now. Trade or sell it, not on my life.
The Bronco II was my favorite tower of the boat. But someone offered my an amount I could not turn down after I sandblasted the rust free body and repainted it. 
This is the one I want to finish next. I've owned it since 1978. F-100 Unibody.

I have 3 vehicles I tow with depending on load/distance. For short hauls with the aluminium boats the 2008 Elantra does a great job, for towing any of my boats to a day trip destination the 1998 GMC truck (5.7l Vortec 2wd with limited slip) can't be beat. For slightly longer trips the Class C motorhome serves as hotel room, restaurant, and tow vehicle. Being only 24' the motorhome is manuverable enough that tight spaces aren't much of a problem and I haven't had a problem backing down any boat ramp so far.

I was a MFG Rep for a custom van builder in Elkhart Indiana for 20 years before I retired about three years ago. I was snoopin around on Craigs List a few weeks ago and ran into this beautiful 06 Chevy custon van built by my company,and the best part , I specked out and sold this van to the selling Chevy dealer when it was new and did the final inspection on it when it came off our line. I just had to have it,has a full frame and 5.3 V8 with a 3.73 locking rear axle so she's a super vehicle for pulling the boats.

Those Ford 6's are bullet proof.
Besides my Cherokee I tow with my Itasca motorhome, Ford 350 with the 460 multiport. Used to have an F250 with a 4 bbl carb 460 and they both got 8 mpg loaded or empty. I never backed down a ramp with the motorhome though, always found somebody that would gladly hook up and dunk the boat. |

Well not period correct but my first truck. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 W/T package, with a 4.3L V-6. Regular cab with 8' bed. Wanted to be able to bring home 4'x8' sheets of ply without lowering the tail gate or sticking above it. Has the tow package and heavy duty suspension. Probably should have gotten the V-8 but went real cheap and a little sorry I did. Pulls the Clipper real easy but it did let me know I was pulling a woody when I pulled the 1953 Century home. Sorry no real pics, been to busy taking pics of the boats. LOL Here's a couple I "borrowed" from a GMC website.

LOL! Now I know you're pulling me leg Cal, but sorry to see your Cherokee looking like Tiger Woods' Escalade. I've had my 1969 Olds since I was 17... It's been thru hell and back in those 33 years. I take much better care of my toys now. Like I said I hope to get a truck someday, something of the period perhaps, but I must admit most of you guys sound mighty content with newer rigs. Backing an RV down a launch ramp to me would be disastrous... I'm still struggling to get my Dorsett in the garage... gave up trying today, maybe better luck tomorrow.

I use my 2002 Chevy Dura Max 6.6 4x4 Crewcab. I pull .
20MPG. Got just a little over 60,000 miles on her.garaged the winter. never seen any salt. I use it for the Fifth wheel and all my boats. Sorry no photos. It is dark blue.  |

My unibody is a custom no frills truck. It is in pieces right now. I'm putting a new frame under it with independant front suspension and disc brakes. I have a 351 windsor, or a 460, or I may just use a newer fuel injected six cylinder. I had a conversion van I used for a few years. My trailer, boat combo is narrow and short. I had to open the back doors to back down a ramp. I also had an F-150 two wheel drive. I gave it to one of the kids when it hit 300,000 miles. They drove it a few years. I even used my 01 Taurus.
Paul Adams poses with my F-150 after I painted it last year. It was not even dry yet. He is not touching it.

i like to use this whenever possible. i've buried the malibu ltz exhaust pipes on the ramp a few times and my wife freaks out. i also feel better about getting into the truck soaking wet from the thighs down, rather than getting the leather and carpeting wet in the car. the mantaray is impossible to load without getting in the water. ron

Hey Ron, have you thought of unhooking the winch hook, then driving backwards about 40 mph or so, then slamming on the brakes? You don't get wet and she launches real clean! I think it's the NASCAR way.

I Use a 2000 Cevy Express 2500 for our 28 foot bayliner to get it to the river in the spring and home in the fall, and usually use a 2004 Jeep Liberty for the runabout. Not at all perior but get the jobs done jsut fine.

'09 Canyon, 4 cylinder, 5 speed standard, factory tow package. It's a dog, but it's all I got. Wife's Subaru Outback actually has more towing capacity, but I like the 4wd for boat launches. Got a 4 door '74 dodge Dart with a /6 I'd like to restore and use as a tow vehicle. Got a '23 T with tremendous torque (406 sbc, TH350, jag rear with 3.74 gears) that I'm sure would tow the boat with no problem, but when the rear 18 1/2" wide tires get wet, they're pretty much useless...

Hey Ron if you mount a winch on top of your cab protector you could winch the Manta Ray right into the bed with it part up. No more trailer licence fees. Sounds like a deal and no more bearing problems on the road.

Frank,Sounds like quite a coral of ponys to pull with! The "T" would be great but yeah them wide tires don't like water much. The Dart would be cool and that ole slant six would have plenty of torque. I had a '76 with the space saver package. Got a lot of use out of that fold down back seat, not much hauling though!

1994 Dodge with Cummins diesel. Shown towing a Dorsett Farallon 21, among the biggest of the old glassic cabin cruisers.
1995 S10 Blazer, which is handy for manuevering big boats in my circular driveway. I couldn't even get a Farallon up my driveway with the Dodge because of the tight turn required, but the Blazer does it handily. Shown here with a Dorsett San Juan 18.

I have used this, but I am not real comfortable with a 4sp. on the boat ramp. '62 Corvette,'58 Wolverine, '57 Evinrude 35hp. I usually use the Honda CRV.
