cal, I did just that, way back in 1969. but it was on one of my dads resort boats that the transom was rotted out, and it was an old cedar strip runbout. all I had was a 35 Johnson longshaft. held up good. but not a heavy or powerful motor. are you going to add extra knees to the transom ? you will only have to go up 5 inches and I think it would work out well. just my thoughts. frog

I did, if you look at the delmar restoration tread you can see that my was a 20" but I raise it all the way up in the first pic cause I want to do the pod on the outside.

If you can raise the transom to fit your long shaft OB, since you're doing a complete tear out of the old wood and putting back a larger plywood transom, laminating it to the hull and tabbing it in, sure... I'd just try my best to make it look like it might have been a tall transom originally. Not just a camels hump in the center of the transom. Contoured and blended to look factory..

Thanks fellas, you helped make the decision. The transom is "broke" so it needs fixin'. It's rotted out with some large holes in it from previous motor installs but this isn't the first time around the block for many of us.
If I take a break on Wednesdays I should be able to step past the hump appearance  Like most of the older glassics it has the 5" transom dip between the aft end of the gunnels so I can just zip slots into the inside ends and run the new transom straight across and then do the fancy schmancy glass blending.The extra knee braces or some type of gusset(s) would certainly be in order. Didn't think of that but an easy fix. |

I seriously considered raising the transom of my Larson Plamate. Just like you I had a short transom boat and a long shaft motor. After much thought I concluded that the boat was designed around a 15" transom and would look goofy if I raised it, and not a lot better if I used a bracket with the motor sticking up 5-6" above the gunnels. Raising the motor would raise the CG also. So I cooled my jets till I found a nice short shaft for it. Then another fell into my lap. So I have a choice of two now. When it rains it pours.
If there were 15 and 20 inch versions of the boat in question then it makes more sense. |

Frog, still negotiating but thinking ahead. I have a few others that I'm looking at also. There's a fella three miles up the road from me that has about 10 old boats sitting on trailers covered up and topped with snow at present. I never even noticed them before but I'll be stopping at his house probably today to inquire. I'll keep you posted.
The past few weeks I've been cruzin' the back roads looking for field sitters etc. Spent more time looking left and right when I should have been looking at the road but that seems to be the nature of us guys on back country roads. Cal |

Couple of things. The fella up the road from me, 3 miles, has the nations largest collection of Switzers. Say's he's been called certifiable:)
He does have a hull of a '70 Glastron that he is willing to "let go" for $200. Hull only, no trailer or motor and it needs tons of work. I'll have to pass. He will never let one of his collection go. Other than that I purchased a '70 Crestliner, 14', trailer but no motor. This is the one I'm thinking of putting in a new higher transom. Won't know for sure until I get it home and do some measuring. 
I know the pictures are small but the best I can do for now. |

OOOOO I'd like to try that one out fishing.
 If you have to totally rebuild the transom and it can be done without making it look "Goofy" as stated above ,I would do that. Goofy is a good word for some add-ons I've seen on boats. Remember that homemade cruiser someone posted a few years ago with a spliced on truck cap?    |

65G3, That's worth a Karma point
 I like the way you shaped it, seems to flow with the lines of the boat. I'm still in the install phase waiting for the 5200 to set up. Keeping the blocking on it for a week. After seeing your design it's making me rethink about cutting out the corners of the cap and maybe just curving back up or maybe even just "slitting" the transom in those corners and sliding the cap back into position. What/how did you top off the new transom to blend it in? 
The final picture is the measurement using a straight edge across the top of the original aft corners so the transom would be straight across after the surgery.

Thats funny Cal, I am dangerous as hell on the country back roads here in Washington, I just have to drive really slow because my Land Rover is pretty good at crawling over anything like flowers, bushes or mailboxes

Last year I was up there with the RV, beautiful country but never had the opportunity to drive over flowers etc. I have done that with my Cherokee though, wife didn't appreciate it too much

Thanks for the link Mark, I looked at those when googling but I needed a new transom anyway. Seems that that "extension" would be putting more leverage on an already wet transom.
I'm in the process of putting the cap back on now. Funny how things never seem to quite fit the same. I found out that the original factory install of the cap was over an inch difference between the port and starboard aft area. The new transom is even steven so now is the process of adjusting and fitting. Things are going along well though. I have to purchase some more glass matt to chop up and fill the 1" void  I'll post some pictures after I get it buttoned down and in primer. Cal. |

Those were my thoughts on the "extender" as well, looks to me like it would put a strain on even a good transom? (Leverage increase, right?)

Finally was able to do a little work on the transom the past few days. Got a thin coat of hi-build primer on it to show up the flaws to be fixed or filled in. It's a start. Raised it to 20 1/2" and it doesn't seem to be an outlandish hump.
Question I have is what do you guys use to cap off the top of your new transoms? There was a mashed up aluminum strip across the old one but it was beyond salvage and something needs to be put on there so the motor doesn't smush it. I can get another aluminum strip but I would prefer something that curves over the edges a little. 
Like I said, it's still needs work. |

Bob,
In tough times you can always bolt a kicker motor stand on back. I'm thinking an aluminum sheet formed to horseshoe over the area where the motor will be but with my bending technique it would probably be worse that the thing I took off.

Good idea, I was kind of thinking that. I know Andrew (Angott) did some bending for a windshield frame, I think by heating it up with a torch to. I'd have to search the forum for the thread he did.

Looks great so far Cal. I made a plate out of (stop sign thickness) aluminum for my last project to protect the transom, and I think the next one will also have a piece of angle stock welded to the top to protect the top of the transom. I'm lucky to have McMaster-Carr in my home town, maybe you have something similar close to you?

The kit boat that my dad built in '59 had an aluminum plate that was angled on top to cover the thickness of the transom and went down far enough on the outside to cover the area where the motor was hanging. It was probably about 1/8" thick if I remember right. It was thick enough to protect the boat but it looked good also. This is the boat.

Went shopping for aluminum today. That stuff's more pricey than gold. Sure went ballistic the last year or two. Local farm store wanted over $50 for a small sheet of diamond plate, plain old sheet stock wasn't much cheaper.

Last street sign I ever collected was made of wood, aluminum wasn't invented yet. I'm going to check out our local village recycle place today. There is also a "restore" shop in the area. I'm also experimenting with making a cap out of PVC by sawing a pvc pipe section in half and using my heat gun to shape it. Could be interesting. Thanks for the laugh. |

Spent a some time "sperimenting" with a short piece of PVC that I had laying around. I cut it in half, using the heat gun will turn it into flexible rubbery easy to work with stuff but it gets hotter than blazes. Heated it up pretty good and then mashed it between two scrap pieces of 2X2. It cooled in about a minute and held the new shape. I then heated up the edges and bent them over the edge of the 2X2 and clamped them for a minute. It came out an almost perfect cap shape. This was schedule 40 PVC, fairly common stuff. since this worked out better than I expected I'm going to pick up some lighter PVC drain pipe and do a section the length of the transom.
Cut in half with my old radial arm saw. 
Clamped with 2X2's after heating. 
Pretty good fit over the transom if I do say so myself.

Normal white sch 40 PVC, isn't UV stable, is the lighter drain PVC? Does Krylon plastic paint stick to either?

Don't know how stable it needs to be but it seems to be tough as nails right now. I couldn't find any lighter stuff at the local store so I bought a 4' pre cut piece of schedule 40 for $2.47 and try to do the whole length. Maybe just shape it on the transom? Even if it doesn't paint up there's nothing wrong with a white cap in my book. This is just messin''round trying other things. If it works - fine, if not it's just a few hours, a lot of education and not a whole bunch of money.
