That sure is looking nice, Cal. I never thought of doing side pads, but for sure would seem more comfortable on my ribs if a cross wave bumps me into the side. At this pace, you will for sure be ready for Spring. I sure like the style and color of that rig!

Thanks Mark and Scott. Just doing a little each day so things get crossed off the punch list. Taking care of the Admiral after her second knee replacement so there's no straying far from home. She's doing well, maybe I can get some grocery shopping done soon :) Ordered the new hull numbers and "SCRIPT" design Evinrude decals for the motor from a local sign shop.

I find that Admiral first, boat second works best for me. If you are giver her even more detailed care than that boat, she is in fine care and should recover nicely. Wishing her the best on recovery and putting that pain and hassle behind her.

Hello All, I have also "just acquired" a Shell Lake Rocket. From this discussion and my research on Fiberglassics, it is the same as 63 Saber's, right down to the color and the errors on the title about it being a 1966 model year. This boat has all the original parts and appointments with some unique rocket/jet style hardware. It has been painted and weathered, so there will be plenty to keep me busy. You may have seen it on craigslist/e-bay lately, in the Milwaukee area. I'll start a new blog when I have more pics. I'm excited to see the support here, and WOW great job Sabre! I hope to get a few tips from you all! This should be fun! Did I mention the 40 hp Evinrude w/ electric shift and the antiquated round tube trailer?

Nice. Greg (frog) will be watching you also. Didn't see that on craigslist but really haven't been looking lately. So far I've found it to be a strong built boat and easy to work on. Seems the spotlight on the bow might have been an option since I now have a spare. The 40 hp motor is a good match and that is probably a Caulkins tilt trailer, nice and strong. Windshield in not original though but there was a windshield posted on "sightings" this past week. I'd like to see pictures of the interior if you can get some. Styles were very close from 1958 through '60 with just some subtle changes in hardware. Search the glassics library and you can pick them out.
Are you in the Milwaukee area? I was born at St. Luke many many years ago

Here are a couple pics from the ad. The windshield is odd. I did see an old newspaper article that said the Rocket had a "double bubble" windshield. Is that referring to the split/walk through style or something else, like a bat mobile? I really prefer the wraparound style and plan on changing this.

I've seen the "sightings" section previously, but now I'm not finding it. Where is it? Thanks!

Some major steps forward the past day. Finished the trailer (I hate doing trailers), set the rocket on and did "adjustments". Hung the motor. There is light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Thanks for all the kudos but it's far from professional. Pictures make it look better than it really is. I'm just a shade tree type of guy. Mechanically I'm more concerned making sure the motor is good, the wiring is perfect, steering etc. Looks good from 20 feet away but don't dare start looking at the minutia  I paint in my garage using a Harbor Freight gun, a compressor that can't keep up with demand, old tools and old equipment.

Just about finishing up. Some small issues with the motor fuel and electrical but nothing serious. Got my fuel pump rebuild kit from maringeengine.com and took a few minutes to do the rebuild. Motor ran good and cool but lost prime on shutdown. Still not getting any motion on my amp meter. Don't know how to check the output of the generator. Still waiting for the graphics for the motor and the registration numbers from a local sign shop.
Might be interested in what ethanol does to a fuel pump.

Five months and I think I can call this one done. Got the motor graphics and hull numbers from the printer this morning. Some may not approve of the Evinrude label....blaaaaat! Needed something to say it's one of a kind.
Don't ask how many days it took to polish our that PITA scratched foggy windshield

Finally splashed her. Sits a little high in the bow but then again it's missing some 220# in the helm area.
Ran the motor for 30 minutes to break it in from years of neglect and non-use.
Didn't go for a run by myself, I like to take someone along with me to handle the paddle, do some high speed needle adjusting.
Windy out on Green Bay also, not a place to be alone with an untried motor.

I'm going to say it ran good, not perfect. No backfires or sputters but every once in a while there was a hiccup. I did not check the points so I'll be pulling the mag/dist this week and probably just clean them up or maybe replace the whole point/condenser setup.
Good time to run a tank of seafoam also to flush her out.
UPDATE>>>
Pulled the cover off the points and they were in very good condition. polished them with some 2000 grit and re-gapped. The old fiber wiper had disintegrated and fuzz was smooching around so I cleaned it all up and put in a new wiper and used some light oil. Hope that cures the occasional hiccup.

Going to have to start a rocket club.
I've forgotten how many time the admiral has asked me "where did that POS come from?"
You are not alone...just set your priorities, happy wife, happy life. I've been married 52 years and still haven't figured that one out yet.

Finally had a chance to get on the water. Rocket handles beautiful. Some minor issues with the fuel delivery. Not getting much response from adjusting the low and high needles. Going to pull them and repack the seals, put on a new fuel line. Have to check the amp meter. still not working.

Sweeet! Looks great! Where were you? I am looking forward to meeting up with you. I have a cracked area on the keel, right where one of the trailer rollers sit. I'd like to get that repaired, even if temporary, before getting it wet. It sure looks like fun! I cant wait to join you!
