Chapter Info - How to start

As for chapters of FG, I generally have very few rules because the idea is simple. Have get togethers, have fun, and promote the rescue and use of Classic fiberglass boats.

Let's use FGNW (fiberglassics northwest) as an example. In 1999, Bill Roberts and Doug Griffith took it upon themselves to change their club, the Classic Skagit Boat Club, into FGNW. They saw that they'd get much better exposure being part of this crazy thing I'm doing. It suceeds because they're a tight nit group that knew each other in the first place and boating is in the blood up there. Boats are part of life and that's why they've become the poster child and example for any chapter that uses the FG name. I haven't the slightest idea how FG became so popular, but it is what it is eh?

Anyway, starting a group in your area can be simple, it can be hard. It just depends on where you are and how enthusiastic people in the area are to do such a thing. In Utah, I started the Bonneville Glassics and although it's off to a slow start, it will grow and next year should be good. It's taken me 3 years to get it off the ground. The thing you need to remember is that it won't happen overnight. You must be consistent and hold course. I have no real rules for chapters as they're more like a family pic-a-nic. Get together, boat, have a good time. The attention will come.

As for the logo, I've always let the chapter president (or leader) just do what they want. As long as the FG name is on it somewhere, that's all I ask. If the chapter begins to grow, I'll even put together a chapter site for you. Members of your chapter will then automatically show up on your site along with their boats. There's no maintenance necessary there and it serves as a great business card for your group to help you grow. When the Skagit club joined FG, we built the FGNW page and it doubled their membership overnight.

Then again, you only get out of it what you put into it. The "more boating, less voting" motto stands. No meeting minutes, no elected leaders, everyone contributes and everyone belongs. It's like a small tribe of people in the early days of the world. Everyone does something and the group flourishes. Get too many leaders and the group fails.

Chapter or group leaders are required to be a paying member. Anyone that organizes a meet of any kind must be a paying member. Other chapters have always paid for their own banners & such because it's impossible for me to do anything like that. I don't make money on this. If you come up with ideas that help make a little money for your group, then just handle it and keep it on a neighborly scale. No special bank accounts, etc. See it as a neighborhood party.

I hope that made sense.

If you have any questions, please get a hold of me and I'll be happy to talk to you.
