According to his obituary, Ernest Seth Smith (Ernie) along with his brother Donald worked for their father, Seth Smith who founded Seth Smith Boat Works (Nov. 10, 2004, Arizona Republic). Seth Smith had a welding business in Mesa, Arizona when he built his first boat in 1921. This was a 20' metal inboard powered by an engine from a Ford Model T. In 1935 he moved to Phoenix. He stopped welding sometime after World War II and his sons joined the business.
