G3 with Merc 225 V6

G3_225_s.jpg (17371 bytes) Chris Beisel with his modified G3 and its Merc V6 225 outboard.  Note the performance lower unit.  This is a factory performance lower unit.  The boat was an experiment and has never been run at full throttle.   Quite an eye catching rig.  Chris and his G3 are the "Most Photograph" G3 and owner in history.  The boat has been the subject of several "Trailer Boat," "Chesapeark Bay" and "Hot Boat" magazine stories.  It's a 1961 model G3.  Restoration work by Chris Beisel.
G3_225_up.jpg (13539 bytes) The Merc 225 is a heavy outboard considering the G3 short 13' 7" length.  It's at least twice the weight of any outboard for which the boat was designed (rated at 60hp).  Thus it stands on its transom when given throttle.
G3_225_fast.jpg (11929 bytes) Once up on a plan, the boat responds well and keeps a nose high attitude. This can be manipulated using hydraulic trim.  The engine is capable of turning 6,000 rpm but has been run up only to 4,200 rpm's.  At 4,200 the boat travels 72 mph.   That's fast enough to be scary.  The bottom has been modified to include a pad along its length.  This boat is often on display at the St. Michaels Maryland June ACBS show.
