TOPIC: Boat and Stern Drive ID Help

Boat and Stern Drive ID Help 13 years 8 months ago #11974

Hi all,

Just joined the and really enjoying so far. Found the site as i was searching for info about an old boat setting by the hiway.

Was wondering if any old hands here qould help.

Cannot find HIN but a metal tag near throttle lever says:
Western Marine
69 503
6 man
900 lbs
130 Max... (HP I suspect)

Badge on dash says "California" "by Western Marine, Santa Ana CA"

Engine is Volvo Penta B20 4cyl on stern drive.

Dash panel says Volvo Penta and has Chrysler logo

Would primarily like to learn how to determine HP/model of stern drive so I can learn some about avaliabilty and price informaion for parts, etc.

This will help me to decide weather or not I have the courage ($$) to consider this really cool old boat for purchase and restore.

I have attached a couple of photos that may help.

if you buy it, Volvo Penta are great outdrives but parts are EXPENSIVE, I'd suggest you buy a parts donor like this one and Always pay close attention to the "U" joints & driveshaft bellows if water leaks in, the u joints get rusty, grenades, & takes out the surrounding aluminum parts and then your at those expensive bits I was referring to an entire used outdrive is cheaper than any of the parts that fail

the gearbox is complicated and you will need professional help to rebuild it if ever needed

that being said, they are rock solid quality outdrives

Hi,new here and my first post...
That would be a Volvo-Penta 270 outdrive vintage mid 70's that appears to have led a hard life. The 270 was not one of Volvo's best efforts, the 280 being far superior. I still have a 280 in my 76 Fiberform thats performing great! Agreed, they "can" be great but I would run from this one as I suspect there are few "donor" bits of any use, IMHO

The boat might have been made by the California Boat Company?
