Kijiji Canada ad # 1298780986 says it runs and has video of it, it's on a stand and needs an impeller and fuel pump diaphram. It's too big for my toys but for $600.00 it sounds like a deal for someone. That's what, about $460.00 US ??

That would be a 71, not a 73 but they are great engines. $600 is pricey for one that has issues, running on the stand tells you nothing. Has to be on a dyno or on a boat to really tell what is going on, so this one may be a risky buy. Proceed with caution.

Well stated George,...But
If it has a good condition 1.78:1, unique carburetors, reed blocks - it's easily to tweak other L-6 reed blocks if the labyrinths are worn, an inner water-jacket,...The 1970-1972 1150 can be converted with ease into a snarling 1350 beast.
Lots of the early 1150 Mercs are survivors, since they weren't very stressed.
Agreed though that even with this option,...$600.00is a risk.
I'd sleep better on a "mystery condition" 1350 at $2-300.00

Oh yes Doc, you are so right. But it always bothers me when I see ads like that, only needs this minor thing and only needs that little tweak. If that were so why was it not done so the seller can advertise it as a clean runner with no issues? Makes me suspicious and more often than not my suspicions are borne out in some way.

I can handle a boat in the worst water but know next to nothing about what stuff is worth. It seemed like a decent price for a tower so I shared. Ya learn something new every day. Should I offer him 200 and see if he bites ? It's too big for me but I said that already. If one of you guys wants it I'll go see the man. You need the parts maybe ?

Two bills is a fair offer but it is way to big for me. Perhaps someone else could chime in here?

Speaking of smaller, what do you fellows think of Mariners ?? A friend is offering me a 45 HP that smokes a bit for free. Is it worth looking into ? I know it's a cheaper version of Merc but how cheap are they ?

Most Mariners over 40 hp are rebadged Mercurys, only differences are cosmetic. The smaller Mariners are excellent engines however, and for free.... Why the hell not?

I learned the hard way that even buying a running motor (that seemed to run ok), I should have performed a compression check. Then maybe I could have paid a bit less up front for the whole boat, motor and trailer to help pay to fix the bad cylinder I later discovered. I will always bring a compression checker when considering a motor purchase.

I'm following in those sad footsteps with my 61 40HP oldNrude. I've got it running decently but with between 60 and 65 lbs compression I think I'm getting about half of that. That's why I'm hoping that Mariner 45HP isn't farther gone than what I've got already. It's got heart but it's lacking nutz. Whatever happened to THAT piston hurt !! I'll try to avoid that at least ! Thanks !

Bad thing was big unexpected expense (since I don't have talent to fix myself)... good thing is that a qualified mechanic rebuilt it which means I have an almost new old motor. Hopefully I can take good care of it so it will serve me and any future owners.

That engine got hot... real hot. Scoring on the exhaust side is usually overheating or water ingestion thru the exhaust ports, possibly a bad exhaust divider plate. Be surprised if the block is still usable after that.

I can't find a mechanic who knows engines as old as mine within an hour of me so finding a machinist to sleeve one would be about my only option. That costs. I agree about doing it right and passing it on with pride. Good on you.
