I think I know the answer...... but
thought I would ask anyway
Here goes
Some time back, mentioned getting a 66 1100 SS for my 79 Predictor
I may have also mentioned, in my inpatients, I fired her up and ran it for a few, without, "key word there...
"without"
checking to see if there was lube in the lower
I have since done so and found it to be bone dry.

Today, managed to get the controls hooked up and was able to locate neutral. You may recall my inability to do so in the past without them.
So, having said all that....
While hand turning the prop I'm feeling,
what I believe, to be an inordinate amount of friction.
Almost sounds gritty.
I did fill the lower to see if that would change anything.
NOt so much.
Have not started the motor!

So, I'm thinking, she is not safe to run without a lower unit tear down...
Any thoughts?

On to what I don't know...
A few days ago
A neighbor down the street brings me a wheelbarrow full of Mercury 150 parts. Near as I can peg it down, I believe the motor was manufactured sometime between 73 and 77.
I am basing this off the CDI Part # 114-2986
They left the PT/ T unit attached to the boat....and consequently the serial number plate.
God knows why
Should mention, the boat is not accessible to me.
The crank turns freely, but, I can see at least two pistons thru the head with significant scoring.

Good news is, in the collection of parts is probably one of the most pristine lowers I've ever come across.
My next question is, will the lower fit fit my 66?
The lower unit casing # for the 150 is 1623-4934
If it would fit, I could eliminate the possible need to go the thru the current lower.

Also, should I keep the distributor and CDI unit to upgrade my pre cdi electronics should they ever fail? Or send them off to ebay?

it will fit check the gear ratio. the ignition will be a bear to retro fit mounting and all.

Had a feeling someone was going ask the gear ratio question
suppose they are different
can the difference be compensated for with prop changes?
Should mention my 66 does not currently have a prop, so I'm not married to any particular pitch

I will check the ratio later this afternoon when the sun drops off the horizon and it cools down a little

also, thanks for the comment on the electronics
I seem to remember reading a thread where the upgrade was done on a 66 or so... but did not remember the specifics

Lar, I think that was Thom (Dr. Frankenmerc) who did that conversion, I remember the thread you are thinking about. (I think) That's been a quite a while back.......

You bet it will work, if it has the small location pins either drill acceptance holes in the mid or grind them off like I did.

A 1500 only came with 2-1 gear ratio like you had on your 1100 unless it got changed but that is a small chance. Easy to check put the lower in gear mark the prop shaft and mark the drive shaft turn the drive shaft and the prop shaft should turn exactly 1 turn to 2 turns of the drive shaft.

If it is different gear ratio yes it can be used with different props...

If you want to loose the 1500 block someday let me know. I have a 1500 that fried some pistons.

Good question, Lar. I'd hate to loose all recall, although I'm afraid it's coming eventually anyway! I went back into the Merc Outpost archives to look for it, got seriously sidetracked and forgot what I was looking for...... Seriously, if you want a reminder of how great this new website is, just take that walk down memory lane into the archives. It was the best we had back then, but it'll sure make the comparison slap you in the face.
