TOPIC: Herters Model Hudson Bay Restoration

Herters Model Hudson Bay Restoration 10 years 10 months ago #78785

This is my first attempt at restoring a boat. Lets start with how i came to own this boat. A friend of mine decided he wanted to move to Florida and so he asked if id help him fix his house to get it ready to sell. He told me he needed to get rid of alot of things before he moved so if wanted anything to let him know and we could make a deal.
Well i saw this green hull sticking out of the weeds and decided to go take a look. It was a boat. At first i wasnt going to ask but decided that it wouldnt hurt to ask. He wanted $30 dollars for it. It came with a trailer and a set of oars as well. I thought it was a good deal and decided to take it. Now there is some damage to it. He had backed into it with the back of his truck and left a hole the size of a bowling ball. Now all the pieces are there so i figured it shouldnt be to hard to fix it.
So that brings us to now. I need some help. Whats the best way about going at this? I want this boat to look brand new when im done. Im not new to restoring things. But i really dont want to be out on the lake and it springs a leak. And any info on the boat would be nice too.

Thanks in advance. I will be posting pics and updates of my progress as i work on it.

Here is what it looked like in the weeds. The trailer is under the boat.

Neat, Seeing the metal plate on the transom, you may want to check for soft spots in the transom. I have been trying to get a 1960 Herters St. Lawrence from a friend for a couple of years. He told me that he would offer it to me first when he goes to get rid of it.
They are neat boats.

Thanks, I will have to look at that. I plan on replacing all the old rubber with new rubber on the transom.

Here I put a piece of fiberglass on the inside of the boat to start with.
