I have had to do the same thing with a trailer years ago. Made getting in and out really easy plus I didn't have to spend half the time trying to reach for stuff. Getting to old to be doing the ladder thing every 5 minutes when you forget something. I made a large stand to put my tools on so i could reach them easyer beside the boat. Skip.

So far I've been pleased with what I have found on this project but today I confirmed what I expected. This particular model has the top and bottom stapled together using an outside lip and then a big ol fat rubber bumper covering the mess up. First time I've ever seen one put together like this. I removed the ugly bumper (went right in the garbage). Next step will be putting a bead of 5200 on the seam from the inside and then glassing the two halves together also on the inside and then cut off the outside lip to make a flush surface and one whole solid vessel. When the mahogany gunwales are installed they will also beef up the seam from the outside.

Did some small steps over the past weeks. Put 5200 on the inside of those seams and let that set for a week then trimmed off that ugly scar sandwhich on the outside. Had to pull the bow area back in shape where the two halves were about 1/4" mismatched. I used small strips of hardwood to pull the halves together and then glassed on both the inside and outside. Have to trim up and put on a second layer of cloth to make sure it's beefy. Filled the inspection holes back in on the deck and glassed them with matt.

The bow area glassed from the inside also. The floatation had to be cut away so I could get access to the bow, that is just as itchey as glass. The other area of floatation that is missing is where the coons scratched away for their bedding.

cal, i like your idea of getting rid of the seam. i wonder if that would work on my rocket, the top fits over the sides , kinda like a lid on an old coffee can. it sticks out about 1/8 inch and hangs down about an inch. sure would love to get rid of the rub rail. what kind of ideas do you have for me on that. thanks . frog

Frog, I would not want to give advice to anyone. What I am doing is out of necessity to accomplish my "woodie" look. I don't know if what I am doing will compromise the integrity to the whole project, all I know is that it was one big ugly seam that didn't allow me to get the mahogany set where I want it to be. I think that "coffee can" overlap would be a lot stronger than what I am doing. My plan is to put mahogany 5" down the outside of the side and then secure both halves with the wood through bolted with stainless, of course plugging over the screw heads.

Don't get the wrong idea here. I use that to cook down my maple syrup in spring.
Started rough mounting the mahogany boards today for fitting out. Still have to finish removing the starboard seams and glassing over the gaps. Posting will be off for a week or so, my laptop is in the shop for repairs. Broken hinge on the flip screen. $$$$ Have to use the other halves' PC.  |

Christmas projects/honey do are done for the next few days, finally got a chance to do something to the Shell. Starting to rough out some of the mahogany planking and dry fitting. Lots of joiner work ahead.

Mahogany color, maybe a light stain. Beveled edges on the decking planks with a white 5200 adhesive. I have the strange feeling this is going to be a several year project like my Sabe was. (three years)

Finally getting some quality time on the project. Starting to fit the deck boards in place as a mock up. Still have to frame the underside. The top deck is so out of line and caved in there's going to be a lot of fine tuning to get it straightened out. Started cutting more plugs for covering up the screws/bolts.

Thanks for the encouragement. A little bit every day I have a chance. Today I cut more strips for the bow, planed them down and chamfored the edges. Still haven't figured out how I'm going to frame between the glass deck and the boards. That glass bow is really warped out of shape, nothing is square or even but you fellas all know how that is

Hi Cal,
I have same type of problem with a deck that is cracked and sunken down along the crack. The question is: How do you get the deck back to shape ? My solution is going to be the same principle as a contour gauge. I'm still designing it, but here is the prototype Mine will be called the RE-contour gauge. it will be a level frame supported by the hull at the bottom, under the deck. The vertical stiles of the frame will be single bolted to the horizontal rails Horizontal Slotted hole at the top with a bolt (bottom bolt to be used as pivots) when I pinch the contour pins together to keep them from dropping, with a ratchet strap near the top . (See picture) I plan on wedging the contour pins under the deck to push it back to the desired shape, and maybe hold the pin in place with a speed screw (drywall screw) I plan on making the thing out of free pallet slats to save some cash. I still don't know how wide to make the pins yet ? I'll figure that out when I make a few. But like always "More are better". The tops of the pins will need to be domed for single point contact. I'm sure I'll need more than 1 gauge too. Take the idea for what it's worth ? It may work, it may not ? But this is how I'm going to try it on mine...

Chuck, looks like it would work. The deck on my project is so out of whak no bracing from underneath will come close to a fix. It is off be several inches, looks like the sun beat down on it so long it melted in
I wound up making framing for under the slats, both port and starboard are completely different, off by inches. Did some work on it all today. Finished framing both sides and then started fitting the slats in. framing is 10" apart making it rock solid. More drilling, counter sinking, screwing, plugging yet to come and then have to fair the whole thing. Probably won't do that until I can get the whole boat outside where I can make lots of sanding dust. Framing on starboard side. 
After all the measuring, drilling and screwing.

Each individule slat is held in with 12 screws and bedded in with 3m 5200. |

I just put a few gallons of water in there and fire her up. Never had to refill. I suppose I could put a threaded plug in the top somewhere.

This one is made from an old swimming pool filter, used to hold 14 fiber cartridges. Now it holds about 10 gallosn of water. I just capped the bottom in/out holes with plumbing ends, got an old salamander from a contractor friend of mine. The condensing tower is optional. Some I've seen made from old small water heaters. I guess anything that you can boil water with will work. Check out some of the local restaurant suppliers, they might have old used cookers that can be converted. Just a thought.
