TOPIC: Anybody seen one of these?

Anybody seen one of these? 14 years 1 week ago #2966

Dig this cool trailer I picked up last weekend -

It's an "Air Bouy" built by the Electric Wheel company. Really cool fenders, trailer is built like a tank. Anybody else ever seen one? This is the only one I have yet to see out here.

Can't say I have ever seen one, however, I do havea 1960 brochure and price list. Electric Wheel Company of Quincy, Illinois was a division of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

Hi Andreas,

Thanks for the note. I have a beautiful Mastercraft full line trailer brochure I need to put up in the Wiki Trailer section

Would it be possible for you to send me a scan of the Electric Wheel Co. brochure sometime? I'd really appreciate it.

Regards,

Bruce

Yes! I have an airbouy, came under my 59 "Watermaster". Currently in a sstate of disassembly, pending finding air bags, and of course, new axle, rollers/bunks, wiring, etc.

I scrapped one. I use the frame on my double stack trailer for the bottom boat - I still have the fenders.
Larry - "Boat Geek" Durant might have the air bags which may or may not be useable.

The only thing I have left from that project is the tower and winch.
Had it listed in the classifieds some time back; no interest.
I don't remember what we did with the axle and associated airbags.
I thought you kept them?

Re:Anybody seen one of these? 14 years 1 week ago #3062

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the info - the brochure images are really cool. I had no idea that anybody had ever built a boat trailer with air suspension. Now the name makes a lot more sense.
My trailer is a LS-900 and is shown as a 1961 on the title. I believe the "LS" means leaf suspension. It probably was made in 1960. It has conventional leaf spring suspension, and appears to be 100% original. Though it is rated for 900lbs, I'm thinking that it could easily handle 1200, as the tires are 5.70 X 8 & 6 ply. The frame channel is about 5" tall & heavy gage. I'm glad mine isn't air suspension - sounds like a restoration nightmare.

I'm going to have my friend re create the oval "Air Bouy" logo so I can make up some decals and perhaps a few T shirts. I am a junkie for cool vintage logos. If anybody would have interest in decals or shirts let me know.

I remember now, I did sell the axle to the trailer some time ago.
I believe the bouy bags went to the scrap yard...maybe
all that to say, they are gone.....

Looked thru my pics to see if I had anything left from when I built the double stack affair for Peter.
Here are a couple showing the bladders.

Can't answer the question Re, will the little air bags that hold up a semi sleeper work? Can't see why not, but is it worth the effort?
