I went to uncover one of my boats last weekend. [stored outdoors] Gave the cover a [slight] tug, and it simply tore, not even on a seam. Originally, I liked my "safeguard" covers, have two of em, were a decent price, heavy weight, very water tight. I even recommended them to others.

However, either winter cold, or UV light, or both, have reduced it to useless after two good seasons.

I need a decent, affordable, outdoor, mooring cover. Universal fit is fine, not sure whether canvas, or polyester, or tyvek, is the way to go. But I don't want to replace it every other year. Or, should I plan to spend $69 every few years, as even a $300 cover may tear, mildew, or suffer thread rot?

Jim, if you're going to let the covered boat sit a while outside, like over the winter, you can put a cheap plastic "tarp" over the good boat cover to protect it. Even the good $300 covers deteriorate quickly when exposed to the sun and the winter elements. The cheaper $20 plastic tarps can be replaced yearly, and will protect your good cover. It's just such a pain strapping them down, even with bungee cords! Better than buying a new good cover tho.........Just a thought.

Good point, live and learn! Harbor freight has tarps at 'disposable' prices!

Maybe you could build some kind of a permanent lean to. I know it sounds crappy but I have seen some nice carports.
