I have a 57 Reinell Jetabout and all is well except the steering doesn't work correctly. I think someone installed a steering unit with a cable that is too long. The boat is 14'. Does anyone know about how long the cable should be?

Maybe this picture will be helpful.
You will probably need to magnify the image to read the details.

Thank you, my steering rack has "Kiekhaefer" on it. Can the cable be replaced with a shorter cable or can the current cable be resized? If it can be replaced where can I find replacement cables that will fit the rack? The boat is only 14' so a 9' or 10' foot cable would probably be sufficient.

You've got your work cut out for you in finding a replacement cable for the old Kiekhaefer rack, and you will want to know exactly what length cable to buy before spending the loot.
Joe Poole Jr or another member of the forum might be able to pull this rabbit out of the hat, but these cables are NLA.
I've often contemplated fabricating a way to use a new Tele-Flex cable with a transom mounted aft end, and a modified helm that would allow use of the old steering wheel.
The transom mount at the aft end would be required since the Tele-Flex cable is too large to pass through the earlier tilt tubes.
Maybe someone has done this??
Maybe one can be found in one of this summer's boat shows??
Maybe you can use a much longer cable, and loop the excess under the front deck?
Is your set up like these attached pictures?
I have a couple extra long ones, if they are like what I have in the pictures.
