TOPIC: 1960 40 hp johnson ?

1960 40 hp johnson ? 8 years 5 months ago #117062

If the 1960 Johnson 40 hp has a week crankshaft is this the same for the 1960 40 hp evinrude ? can the cranks from a newer (62 up)motor be used? or is it best to use a newer motor ( 62 up and just use the older hood ). thanks Bob

badger bob,

ALL of the 1960-61 OMC outboards "have a problem" (They are too "bored out") & I would AVOID all of them.

just my OPINION, satx

Hi Bob,

I have a 1960 40 Super Quiet parts motor. It has a broken transom mount and I never fooled with it. Has not been run for many years.

I travel to Delmar Ia. often and pass through Dubuque.

Let me know if you have interest, Gene

P.S. You could have it for cheap.

Satx and Gene thanks for the input. I have a 1960 span America v.i.p.runnabout. and was thinking about putting a more correct year motor on it. now I have a Johnson 1964 40hp with a hood from a 58 super quiet it. it looks good and runs good. I like the looks of the 60 35-45hp mercurys but there hard to come by around hear and not to ez to work on for me. so I think that ill just stick with the Johnson. thanks for the help. Bob
