TOPIC: New Floor and Transom work

New Floor and Transom work 12 years 8 months ago #38614

SS, his son Wade and Don Hines replaced the front and rear floor this weekend in my G-3, As well as putting new knee braces and a new cross brace on the transom, as the old ones were bad. My right side seat bracket had broken thru the rotton floor after taking a high jump a while back.

Also, we plan to have more room in the rear by leaving the splash well out. Will have a small one running across about 6 inches in width.

Bill
I was thinking the same thing
All that new structure work sure looks like prep for a super secret dark side addition.
Perhaps Jim will hide it's true nature from Elizabeth with an altered cowl or deceptive decals....
Maybe that expensive prop, was never intended for the 65.

Props
Great extension on the idiom

To which I would add:

He lives vicarously through himself,
And, when in Rome, they do, as he does.

Bill
I owe it all, to my effervescent, one toke over the line personality.
And, to the Big People, who make us little people, smaller

Kind of you to notice, ask, and do something about it!

Now, if I just had a Red Ryder BB-Gun with a compass in the stock
all, would truly, "be right with the world."
Oh ya, and my G-3 Restored.

Incase Jim's lurking, are those knee braces glassed over a thin ply frame or solid wood, there sure large, not complaining just lacking the cells to know :(

Re:New Floor and Transom work 12 years 8 months ago #38752

Those knee braces are screwed to a stringer and the new plywood floor is knotched around the braces and ALL that is glassed in now!!

Just gotta sand it down and paint it!

I built the transom stout because the old braces were only glassed to the floor and both had rotted since being put in in 2004!!

The transom was flexing when I accelerated the Merc 650 and the braces were pulling up from the floor!!

But, it is well built now for whatever may come along over the years for a power plant!!!

Should have it ready for the Sept 24 event!!

And yes, the prop was bought for the 650!!!

Bill, the lumber is solid fir, so that the glass gets a deep bit into the wood, mat base, then when tacky it get a layer of heavy cloth. That makes a stand alone transom that is not tied to the deck, so any flex caused by the cmc will not break loose any splash well seal,or deck connections. SS

Dam you guys are lucky to have someone close to help when you need it. I'm out here in the desart of Nevada and no glass heads any where close. The only one I can get to help me a my buddy the lives 30mile away and have to go get him that makes for a 120 mile trip when done. The gas adds up.
Jim with all the beefing up of that transome you will have to get a bigger OMC motor to put on it. A Stinger sure would look nice on it.

ShortShaft Bill

Jim mentioned your going to install a modified splashwell.
Is it the plan to cut down the original, hack up a donor, or pull a mold off a selected area of the original?

Re:New Floor and Transom work 12 years 8 months ago #38866

Lar, I am going to simply slope a front on the cross beam toward the bow just to rise up to the edge of the deck with a one inch vertical. It will clear the holes for the cables. This way Jim will be able to reach all the plugs in the water well, the auto bildge pump will handle any over splash. Also this boat will not be left in the water over night anymore. SS

Those new knees are attached to a Stringer with screws, the floor is notched around them, and then it all is totally glassed in!!!

Re:New Floor and Transom work 12 years 8 months ago #38891

Appreciate it Lar. No surgery yet. Met with surgeon TODAY and he verified a torn miniscus and set surgery for August 11, 2011 to do "scope" surgery and clean it out! He says I will be laid up for about a week or so. I will keep ya informed, and now I just have to keep taking pain pills and hurting really badly til Aug. 11!!!!

I appreciate your concerns my good friend!! Pic taken in Chattanooga 2 weeks ago!

Jim
my mistake, was under the impression you were going to get sliced and diced today.
So, with pain, and pills, and recovery time, I suspect boating is out for awhile. Looks like Bill has a good plan for The Savage II's upgrade. Keep us posted on the progress.
Beyond that, were it up to me, I'd stop by your cabin for a cup of Joe. Would like to spend some time with ya!
Best to you

Jim
Several years back, the Dr's found a cyst hiding behind my aorta.
They let me go a year before making me have the surgery.
I needed that year, for I to, was scared sh#$ less.
The plan, was to do the scope surgery thru my right side on the first attempt.
If they couldn't get it, they'd just flip me over and open me wide up to remove it.

Needless to say, I had grave concerns I'd wake up meeting Jesus.

I always wondered, if you die in dream, do you know your dead?

Anyway, I digress.

As it turned out, they were successful on the first try.
I was up and walking around within hours of the procedure.

I share that story, not to make light of your fears or reservations, but only to say;
"those professional surgeons have gotten pretty damn good at this stuff.
They know what they are doing.
It did take awhile for me to fully recover: had odd pains at the incision holes for many years.
I rarely, if ever, think of them or feel them today.
You may not be up walking right away,, but I'd venture, you will be good as new in no time.
All that to say, fear of the unknown, can be more crippling than what will actually take place.
Plus, I suspect, you will have friends in high places, watching over you.

Thanks Lar, for the kind words and encouragement. I feel that I need this done, as the pain is terrible all the time right now!!

I think i will heal quickly and be banging up and down and around in the G-3 soon.

I have had two other surgerys in my days, and healed and forgot about them really soon thereafter!!

Keep in touch,

Jim
